Salam and hi everyone,

As for another post in my Hong Kong Living series, I want to share the websites to look for rental accommodation. Either you are looking for a room, living share space or an apartment here are the top 3 websites that I recommend for you to try. But still, you have to be careful and be aware of scammers out there regarding rent's contracts and payment. I do have few stories about rental scammer that people share in Facebook that I will share at the end of this post.

This is where I found my current place. This website are mix between studio and rooms offer. I believe this is more on the affordable site of rental price. Where you need to pick and choose on what you willing to let and the one that you must have in your apartment. I did check on this website every single day before I got my place. Mainly because for a good price, space size and location offer, its went out pretty fast. Within couple days and even hours. So you need to decide on spot either or not you want to rent the place after viewing it. You can filter your search to your desired area and price range. It make the search pretty easy and you can contact the owner or the person who post it right away without having to make an account.

I mainly communicate with the other party using email until I decide to rent the place. I dont really like to give out my phone numbers either for WhatsApp or calling to avoid spams unless necessary.

EasyRoomate Website

If you looking for cheaper price but bigger space, I'll suggest for you to share a living space. Which means to live in an apartment with other few people. Your rental room not necessarily big but at least you have separate bathroom, living room and toilet with better payment.

For this website, you need to create an account and post your criteria. Its like both parties need to advertise their search. Either the owner/agent looking for tenants and vice versa. The good thing about this is that you have a chance to pay less than you should to because you are dealing directly with the owner. The contracts can be slightly negotiable.

I found my first place from this website. Sharing an apartment with 3 other girls and only pay for 1 + 1 deposit. When I came first here, I stay in an airBnB for 2 weeks before move into the apartment. The risk of living in shared apartment is that there are possibility you dont like your roommates/housemates. And thats exatly what happen to me. People have their own way of living and routines. And, as for me I cant deal with the person who force others to live around their routines and ways. For example, I have to shower at 730 so that she can shower at 800. If I shower at 745 and finish at 805 she will nagging but if she shower from 745 until 810 thats her time. Can you see how fucked up and childish thats is? Thats just 1 small things out of thousands problems she found in others. Each time I remember the people in there, it make me mad.

So, even though I dont like my last place, I still recommend this website if you which to find a room to rent instead of studio apartment. You can also filter your budget and area of living when you set up your to search advertisement.

Facebook page; FindYourRoomInHongKong and RentAFlat

These are the 2 Facebook groups that I use to search for a place last time. I didnt find anything  that I like within my time frame but I do like most of the room that they post in there.

Usually the people who post on there are the one looking for break the lease. Which mean for example the contract they signed is for a year but they decided to check out early, instead of break the agreement, they just find someone else to continue living in there without getting penalty. The owner or the agent are more than happy to continue the contracts if you decided to continue living there. And, sometimes you can find people posting to rent their place for a month or 2 as their travelling or be outside of country. Its the best way to save money because usually they offer cheaper price and everything is already there and you can just move in with your suitcase.

The downside of this page is that you cant filter your search like where you want to find your rental apartment and within how much price range. I think this really depends on your luck. I found few place that I like in this post that within my budget but its not in my preferred area. Or another case would be the apartment that I like within my area is out of my budget. So, this really hit and miss either or not you find the place.

Even though its a bit harder to get a good offer, there are good chances for you to get best offer and this is where I know about all the scammer incidents. I didnt screenshot the post but its there if you want to look for it. I read in couple posts in the 'FindYourRoomInHongKong' wall where people share their story.

STORYTIME: One of them was, when they found a place to rent via online before they come to Hong Kong and make all the payments with hope that once they landed here, they can go to straight to the house and start living. Little did they know, once they arrive to the house, it looks totally different than the pictures they provide. Its filthy and dirty. No lift because its in an old Chinese building. And whats more heart breaking is that when they make a police report, the police cant do anything because in the contracts its already stated that the owner can decide either or not to allow the tenant to get into the house and on top of that they have the rights for not giving back the paid payment. Which by the way the pay in full for 2+1 deposit. Can you imagine for that to happen? If its happen to me I'll just fly back home and never come back. Mainly because I dont have any money left and the only I can do is to borrow some money to buy tickets home.

I hope you find this helpful and know what to do next if you looking for a place to rent here in Hong Kong. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions. This is just based on my experience and what I use to find my place. If this does not suit your life style well maybe you can go straight to property agents and ask them to  look for suitable place for you.
